Supporting People With FASD

In this 7-hour online course, students learn about strategies to support individuals and families affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Topics include behaviours typically exhibited by individuals living with FASD, daily living strategies to support individuals with FASD, intervention and support strategies from early childhood to adulthood, and the importance of a strength-based approach to support people living with FASD

Skills / Knowledge

  • Describe how those with FASD can have differences in brain structure and function, and how these differences can manifest as challenging behaviors
  • Identify and describe challenging behaviors typically exhibited by individuals living with FASD and how these behaviors may have an impact throughout the lifespan
  • Explore various daily living strategies to support those living with FASD in many contexts, such as transition periods, the criminal justice system, and during various developmental stages
  • Discuss various forms of interventions and support strategies
  • Discuss the role that families, schools, employers, and community services play in the transition to adult life of youth with disabilities
  • Articulate the importance of recognizing and working with the strength and resilience of people living with FASD
