Regional Business Development

In this 5-hr online course, participants learn about the vital role a business ecosystem plays in supporting entrepreneurship and business development. Business systems, trends, and resources play a vital role in innovation and generating value. In this course, we will learn how to cultivate vibrant business systems at the regional and municipal level. The course consists of 5 lessons: • Lesson 1: Economic trends • Lesson 2: Clusters, ecosystems, and conditions for thriving ecosystems • Lesson 3: Common approaches to economic development • Lesson 4: Developing regional ecosystems • Lesson 5: Strengthening regional economic systems

Skills / Knowledge

  • • Identify the 6 major trends impacting Canadian businesses and how those trends benefit and harm competitiveness and entrepreneurship within municipal ecosystems
  • • Define what a system is and describe how a system applies to regional economic development
  • • Recognize what a cluster is and its role in regional economic development
  • • Compare and contrast common approaches to regional economic development and consider how some of the approaches may do more harm than good
  • • Form and/or reshape existing clusters to address the 6 major economic trends
  • • Discuss the components of and barriers to entrepreneurship
  • • Describe the conditions for a thriving and prosperous SME environment
  • • Identify choke-points in an economic system and how to address the choke points
  • • Mobilize resources and people
