Understanding the Duty to Consult

Jason Presement

Sault College in collaboration with Project Learning Tree Canada, an initiative of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, developed this 3-hour online course for individuals in the forestry sector who possess moderate knowledge about Indigenous Peoples in Canada and who are responsible for Indigenous community engagement, consultation, or implementation of 3rd party certification. The course presents an introduction to Aboriginal, treaty and title rights, as enshrined in Canada’s Constitution Act, and provides an overview of legal and regulatory requirements flowing from the Duty to Consult and Accommodate. Emphasis is placed on action-oriented information and strategies for forest sector professionals. This is a compressed module of the Respecting Aboriginal and Treaty Rights Within Sustainable Forest Management course, which is the first in a four-part e-learning series on Indigenous Rights and Relationship Building in the Forestry Sector.
